The ARH Foundation for Healthier Communities will sponsor Camp Noah for children who were victims of the catastrophic flooding in Eastern Kentucky last July. The week-long camp will combine fun, typical summer camp experiences with ways to deal with the after-effects children commonly experience after such traumatic events.

“We are grateful that thanks to our amazing partners, we can help with this side of disaster,” ARH Foundation Director Angela Bailey said. “We have been able to disburse over $2 million in funds as well as over 4 million lbs. of physical supplies. Now we can help children directly in Breathitt, Floyd, Knott, Letcher, Perry, and Pike counties in another way; dealing with this tragedy and helping build resiliency.

“Camp Noah has helped over 14,000 elementary-aged children in 29 states and Puerto Rico. Almost all parents whose children attended the camp said now their children feel safe during severe weather, feel more prepared for storms, and know their safe place. Most impressive to me is that 100 percent of parents whose children attended Camp Noah say they would recommend it to other parents.”

While the focus of Camp Noah will be on children, the impact will be seen throughout the communities. Families will witness the renewed resiliency of their children and learn about the disaster preparedness backpacks that will be provided to participants. Local staff and volunteers, including high school and college students, will experience activities and learn how to apply lessons learned during Camp Noah in other settings.

When all the camp details have been finalized, the long-term recovery groups in Breathitt, Floyd, Knott, Letcher, Perry, and Pike counties will advertise and contact families in need.
