

BIG STONE GAP, Va. — A South Carolina man accused of killing a Big Stone Gap police officer was arrested Saturday night in Tennessee, hours after the shooting occurred.
Officer Michael Chandler was working on his birthday, when he was asked to conduct a welfare check of an individual inside a vacant building around 4 a.m. Saturday. As he approached the building, he encountered another person and was shot.
He was later found by a Wise County deputy lying unconscious in a ditch. He died around 7 o’clock Saturday night.
Meanwhile, local, state and federal law enforcement agencies mobilized to track down the suspect, Michael Donivan White, 33, of Clinton, S.C. He was found in a Kingsport motel and was arrested without incident.
Officer Michael Chandler was 29 years old.
