A piece of legislation aiming to end corporal punishment in public school is advancing through the Kentucky general assembly.
House Bill 22, which would end corporal punishment, such as speaking, in Kentucky’s public schools, was received in the Senate on Monday after passing the the House of Representatives by a 65-17 vote. The bill’s sponsor, Republican State Representative Steve Riley, who is a former educator, says experience has taught him that corporal punishment is not an effective form of discipline.
The bill was originally suggested by three Kentucky public school students.
