Conn signals possible guilty plea to escape charges

LEXINGTON, Ky. — It appears former disability attorney Eric C. Conn is now ready to accept responsibility for his alleged escape from home incarceration and flight to Honduras last year.

Conn filed a motion asking for rearraignment, in order to change his pleas on the four counts with which he is charged. Those charges include escape, failure to appear and two counts of conspiracy.

U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves granted the request this morning and set a hearing for May 25.

Each charge carries a potential maximum sentence of five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

The motion does not specifically state that he plans to plead guilty to the charges, but that is typically what happens during a rearraignment hearing. The motion makes no mention of a more creative plea, such as an Alford or no contest plea, and says he plans to plead without the benefit of a plea agreement.

Conn was awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to theft and bribery last year, when he went to Lexington to meet with prosecutors and his attorneys. After that meeting, he allegedly removed his GPS tracking device and disappeared. He was arrested six months later while he dined in a Honduran Pizza Hut.

Conn is currently scheduled to go on trial on the escape charges next month. He faces another trial related to a scheme to defraud Social Security in January.
