VIENNA, W.Va. – Veteran Chapmanville Regional head softball coach Ronnie Ooten likes nothing less than a state championship at season’s end.
His Lady Tigers found themselves back on the big stage this week at Jackson Park, facing undefeated and defending champion Herbert Hoover for the second straight year in the title matchup.
Despite jumping out to an early one-run lead, the Lady Tigers were no match for the Lady Huskies as CRHS dropped an 11-1 mercy-rule decision in the Class AA championship showdown.
Hoover capped a perfect season, finishing 33-0 while running its win streak to 34 straight games. CRHS closed out the year at 22-5.
Second baseman Bailey Parsons walked and scored on first baseball Jada Freeman’s RBI-double. It was the Lady Tigers only run scored against Hoover in three games.
Freeman had two hits in the loss while outfielders Kara Browning doubles, Sara Butcher and Karah Little each singled.
Senior all-state hurler Kenzie McCann suffered the loss.
CRHS eliminated Petersburg, 11-1, in five innings to reach the title game after falling to Hoover, 1-0, in the winner’s bracket finals. The Lady Tigers knocked off Wyoming East, 5-3, in its opening round matchup.
McCann and Butcher were all-tournament selections.
Ooten’s Tigers now have six championship and seven runners-up trophies to display.
