Domestic Violence vigil held in Prestonsburg

Floyd County, Ky.– In the United States nearly 20 people per minute are abused by an intimate partner. That means 10 million people a year become victims of domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Turning Point Domestic Violence Services held a candle light vigil in Prestonsburg to remember the 20 victims who lost their lives to domestic violence in the state of Kentucky this year. Officials with Turning Point say giving someone the support they need when they are in an abusive relationship is important.

“So many people that are in abusive situations are isolated from their family and their friends and they don’t have that support system. We just want people to be aware that it is not that easy to leave. Women are at a 75% greater risk of being killed for leaving an abusive relationship. Just be there for your loved ones and believe them what they’re telling you.”
