Eastern Kentucky students dream big with tiny houses

PIKEVILLE, Ky. –  Some eastern Kentucky students are taking advantage of the “Tiny House” movement that has swept the nation in the past few years by building, competing and then selling their own tiny houses.  Several tiny houses were on display last week at the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative “Fire Summit” held at the East Kentucky Expo Center. Schools who participate in the program are presented with a $15,000 dollar grant from KVEC to fund the project, which results in a complete, functioning home between 200 and 300 square feet.  2018’s winning tiny house sold for just over $21,000 dollars, and was built by students at Phelps High School.  It now sits on the edge of a cliff in California overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Bidding for the 2019 tiny houses will begin in June.  More information can be found online at www.kentuckyvalley.org.
