TEABERRY, Ky. — A Madison County man was indicted in Floyd County last week after a hit and run incident last July.

According to court documents, Kyle Collins, 23, of Berea, failed to stop and render assistance after a motor vehicle collision resulted in the death of a pedestrian. Court documents also say Collins should have known the pedestrian died or suffered serious physical injury.

“It’s a bitter-sweet situation,” said Larry Hinkle’s son Jody Hinkle. “I’m glad that the charges were filed, that way it gets started in the court system. But, he’s actually not being held accountable for the death. He’s being held accountable for leaving after what he had caused. That’s not enough.”

It happened on Route 979 by D’s Grocery at Teaberry on July 1st. Larry Hinkle, 60, of Teaberry, was struck by a vehicle while walking along the side the road. Almost one year later, the family is still distraught.

“We don’t understand how somebody can run over a human and leave them in the road dead like a dog for 45 minutes and then only get charged with fleeing the scene,”  said Larry Hinkle’s daughter-in-law Ashli Hinkle. “There’s a lot of heart ache … there’s a lot of tears everyday. We just hope and pray that God will show us what we need to do to get things done.”

Kyle Collins is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, which is punishable by 1-to-5 years in prison.
