WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — In an effort to promote the Tug Fork River, Allen “Grizzly” Daughtery and his son Jacob are kayaking the entire river from Welch, West Virginia to Louisa, Kentucky.
“My son jokingly said ‘We should float this whole river,’ and I said, ‘That’s pretty far,'” Allen Daughtery laughed. “He’s going to graduate next year and he plans to follow in my footsteps and be a Green Beret. If he does that, this will be his first little selection process. This is our last Summer and I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do it.'”
The Phelps father and son duo started their trip last Sunday and will finish this coming Sunday.
“It’s been a really good adventure so far. We’ve had a lot of bonding time. We just recently slowed down enough to catch some fish and have some people join us. We’ve seen lots of old railroad bridges and lots of historic places. There’s been a lot of hospitality along the way with people helping us out.”
The two have been documenting their adventure on the Friends of the Tug Fork River Facebook page.
“We would like to help promote what you’re doing with the river to get more access points.”
To follow their journey and see when their next rest area is, join the Facebook group. Daughtery says to bear with him on times, however.
“The river dictates and so does my arms.”
The pair plans to be in Louisa around 3 p.m. on Sunday.
