Five People Killed In Three Accidents Christmas Eve

It was a deadly holiday on area roadways with five people killed in three separate crashes on Christmas Eve in our area.

The first happened around 10:20am Christmas Eve on Town Mountain Road in Pikeville, just before Williams Hollow and involved three vehicles.

Four people were transported to Pikeville Medical Center for their injuries.

62-year-old Maybell Tibbs of Dry Branch in Pikeville died later that evening.

The crash remains under investigation by Pikeville Police Department.

Another crash, this one in Lawrence County, killed three people Monday afternoon when the car they were riding in slowed to take a left turn and was hit from behind by a tractor trailer on US 23 near the Big Sandy Power Plant.

The driver of the car, Edwina Wilson and passengers Brenda Charles and a 12-year-old girl were killed in the crash near Louisa.

No criminal charges have been filed against the truck driver and alcohol is not suspected in the crash which remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

The third deadly crash happened just before 7:00pm Monday evening on US 23 near Skate Road in Johnson County.

95-year-old Orville Turner of Prestonsburg was driving southbound when he hit the guard rails, crossed into the northbound lanes, hitting a truck.

Turner was pronounced dead at the scene. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
