Floyd County: KY 550 shut down after slide blocks both lanes

FLOYD COUNTY, KY — KY 550 has shut down after an active slide has blocked both lanes of the highway.

According to a Facebook post from KYTC District 12 :

KY 550 is shut down at mile point 0-1, right past the intersection with KY 7 because of an active slide that has blocked both lanes of the highway. People can get to KY 7 from Garret; the road closure starts just past Woodie’s Carryout Liquor Store.

Minnie Maintenance Assistant Superintendent Adam Brown said his crew has been monitoring this area, keeping it clear, for several days.

In the interest of public safety, the decision to shut down the road was made at midnight last night.

Barriers were installed and men from Minnie Maintenance stayed at the site all night to stop motorists from running into the slide. “We don’t have message boards up yet,” Brown said, “but we have men stationed on either side of the slide.”

He said the hillside is still unstable; the slide is still moving.

D12 maintenance specialists, engineers, and officials from Jigsaw, one of the district’s emergency contractors, will evaluate the situation after daylight.

We will provide updates on this situation as they become available.
