Former loan officer guilty in bank fraud trial

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The federal bank fraud trial of a former BB&T loan officer is over.

Brent Lee had been accused of conspiracy; two counts of bank fraud; two counts of theft, embezzlement or misapplication by a bank officer; and four counts of unauthorized obligation by a bank employee.

Following a three-day trial, the jury needed a little over two hours before reaching a decision just before 7 o’clock last night. Their verdict? Guilty on all counts.

With the guilty verdict, the jury found Lee helped a Prestonsburg real estate developer obtain loans in his daughter’s name to support his gambling habit.

The most serious of the charges carries a potential penalty of up to 30 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines.

Lee’s motions for dismissal, acquittal and a new trial were all rejected. He will now return to court May 31 for sentencing. He remains free on bond.
