HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Varney powers Bucs past Miner; Jags top Hawks

Belfry’s Jake Varney belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Pirates to a 12-1 victory over Mingo Central in a game played at Jim VanZant Field in Williamson on Monday night.

The Pirates, now 12-8, pounded out 13 hits. Gage Fields had three singles, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Steven Banks had two hits, including a double, scored a pair of runs and added an RBI. Jonathan Banks singled twice, scored two times, and knocked in one run.

Chase Justice was the winning pitcher.

Ryan Conley walked and scored the lone run for the Miners. Tyler Ooten took the loss.

Floyd Central continued its late-season success with a 6-2 road win over Pike County Central in a game played on Monday night.

Wesley Prater, Dylan Mosley, Max Martin, winning pitcher Caleb Hager and Jacob Bentley all had hits and knocked in one run each as the Jaguars moved to 9-12.

Bryce Adkins had two hits, one a double, and scored once while driving in one run for the Hawks, who dropped to 9-10. Jared Stanley had two hits and added an RBI.

Luke Thornsbury was the losing pitcher.
