HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Jet sweep pass lifts Bobcats past Cardinals in thriller

First-year Betsy Layne head football coach Jarredd Jarrell knows a thing or two about the jet sweep.

It stayed in his playbook until his Bobcats needed it the most this past Friday night against visiting Martin County.

Nicholas Howell took the ball from quarterback Chase Mims, rolled to the right, and fired a 19-yard strike to a leaping Brady Robinson in the back of the endzone to lift Betsy Layne to a stunning 26-25 victory over the Cardinals.

Robinson finished with four catches for 60 yards and two scores, but none bigger than his TD grab in the closing minutes. Howell had five receptions for 100 yards.

Quarterback Chase Mims passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 91 yards on 11 carries and a score.

Martin County running back Dawson Mills ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns on seven rushes. He also hauled in a TD pass from quarterback Jason Maynard. Kicker Bobby Hale added a field goal.

Both teams are back in action this coming Friday night as the Bobcats host Morgan County (1-0) while the Cardinals welcome Greenup County (0-0).
