Howard signs to continue football career with UVA Wise

WHITESBURG, Ky. – Letcher County Cougars star Garrett Howard has signed to continue his football career as a Cavalier at the University of Virginia at Wise.

A standout Middle Linebacker and running back for the Cougars, Howard was a highly decorated high school athlete where he earned All-State defensive honors. The 6’1″ 230 pound has been a cornerstone of the Cougars’ defense and ground game throughout his high school career.

Defensive Impact

Recognized as one of the top linebackers in the state for his class, Garrett is noted for his quick closing speed in open-field one-on-one situations and reliability in pass coverage. He averaged 8.3 tackles per game as a sophomore.

Offensive Impact

As a senior in the 2025 season, Howard was a primary leader of the Cougars’ ground game, recording 17 rushing touchdowns by late October.

Career Highlights and Performance

During the 2024 season alone, Howard amassed consistent and impressive stats including:

vs. Belfry: 13 total tackles, 1 fumble recovery.
vs. Perry County Central: 7 total tackles, 1 touchdown.
vs. Shelby Valley: 1 caused fumble.
