Juvenile charged with bringing gun to school in Harlan County

A juvenile in Harlan County is facing a felony charge after allegedly bringing an unloaded gun to school.

According to a statement from Harlan County Public Schools, which includes a statement from the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, the juvenile brought an unloaded gun to Rosspoint Elementary School on Monday. The gun was concealed in a backpack, the statement said.

The statement said officials were made aware of the situation by a student and acted quickly to take possession of the weapon. No ammunition was located and no threats were made to any individuals or to the school.

The statement from the sheriff’s office indicates the gun may have been left in a backpack following a camping trip this past weekend.

The child was charged with a class D felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon on school property. A court designated work was assigned to the case, and the juvenile was lodged in the Breathitt County Juvenile Detention Center.

Harlan County Superintendent Brent Roark commended his staff for their handling of the situation.

“I can’t commend our students and staff enough for their actions this morning,” said Roark. “The students knew exactly what to do and responded appropriately. Our teachers and staff are trained in preparedness and they responded appropriately as well. The weapon was not loaded and the student made no threats to or against anyone.”

The statement from Harlan County Schools indicated the student will be subject to an expulsion hearing by the Harlan County Board of Education.
