Man charged after 90-mph chase

A Pikeville man is facing several felony charges after allegedly fleeing from Pikeville Police at speeds around 90 mph.

According to court documents, 57-year-old John Charles, of Williams Hollow in Pikeville, was arrested Sunday evening. Court documents said Pikeville Police attempted to stop Charles’ vehicle due to an illegible temporary tag, and he began fleeing from officers at speeds of up to 90 mph.

Court documents say Charles nearly struck several oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane of travel while he drove his vehicle in the wrong lane during the chase. Court documents allege that Charles drove in the opposite lane for long distances during the chase.

Officers suspended the pursuit due to the danger to the public and, according to court documents, they arrested Charles at a family member’s residence later in the evening. Court documents said during the course of the arrest, Charles refused to remove his hands from his pockets and had to be taken to the ground by officers.

According to court documents, Charles threatened to attempt to kill the arresting officer in the case if the two encountered one another again.

John Charles was charged with numerous counts, including felony fleeing or evading police, felony wanton endangerment, third-offense DUI, resisting arrest and other charges. He was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center and pleaded not guilty in Pike District Court. He was ordered held on a $2,000 cash bond.
