MARTIN COUNTY, KY.-K-9 officers are in harm’s way as much as their human partners. Sometimes even more so as K-9’s are often the first to be sent in to a dangerous situation. That means they also need to be protected as much as possible.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Department is making sure their K-9 officer Grim is being protected as he just received a brand new bullet and stab proof vest. The vest was donated to him from Vested Interest K-9’s, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide bullet and stab proof vests to dogs of Law Enforcement throughout the country in memory of other K-9 officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Martin County Sheriff’s Department K-9 handler, Billy Patrick, says that Grim is not only his partner, but his best friend, and knowing that he is better protected gives him a sense of relief.
“God forbid he ever got shot or stabbed, but you know it’s his job to protect us. The vest could help him if he got shot or if somebody tried to stab him while trying to get him off of them because he will bite them if we send him in. I know with no doubt that he has my back. He’s not going to run from anybody and they are not going to back him down. He will be there until the end for me.”
