Kayak enthusiasts will have an opportunity to enjoy a day of fun on the water while benefiting the Kermit Volunteer Fire Department.
Fire Chief Wilburn “Hawky” Preece said the fundraiser will take place beginning in East Kermit at noon on Saturday, June 22. Kayakers will travel down the Tug River to the finish line under the bridge, located on Virginia Avenue, along the West Virginia and Kentucky borders.
Funds raised will help the department purchase additional water rescue gear. The department is the only one of its kind in Mingo County with a trained swift water operation team.
For those individuals wishing to help or wanting to enter the race can rent a kayak from $10 from Rebel River Outfitters, who will be on hand for the event.
Registration fee is $25 per person. The winning kayaker will win a first-place prize of $300. Second and third place winners will be recognized as well.
For those wishing to float along the river but not compete in the actual race, Preece said they may do so for a $10 donation.
Members of the swift-water rescue team will be on hand to lend a hand to those who may encounter issues while participating.
