Knott man killed in Letcher logging accident

A Knott County man was killed Saturday in a logging incident in Letcher County.
According to a statement from Kentucky State Police, David Michael Thomas, 25, of Kite, died Saturday after he was struck by a tree while logging. The incident happened at around 8:45 a.m. at Love’s Branch in the Deane community of Letcher County.
KSP Post 13 in Hazard reports that the initial investigation into the incident indicates that loggers had cut a tree and the felled tree became entangled in another. Loggers continued working in the area and the felled tree became dislodged and fell, striking Thomas in the head. Thomas was unconscious, but breathing when emergency responders were contacted, but was pronounced dead at the scene by Letcher County Coroner Renee Campbell.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The incident remains under investigation by KSP Trooper Branden Watts. Thomas’ body was sent to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for autopsy. According to KSP, no foul play is expected in the incident.
At the time of the incident, the area was experiencing brief, strong winds.
