Letcher County, Ky: Last week, we told you about an effort by the Letcher County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to collect toys and other items for Busy Boxes for kids who have to go through the court process. On Saturday, toys, games, crayons and other items were collected at Whitesburg Walmart for the effort. Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Burton told EKB News that the purpose of the Busy Boxes is to help children relax in the court setting.
“Sometimes parents have court for civil reasons or criminal reasons and they can find a babysitter or cant afford a babysitter, so they have to bring their kids. Sometimes their kids end up being the one that has to testify in some of the cases. I just helps the kids relax when they got a toy or something to play with;it takes their mind of the stress that they are in at that time. So its just a good thing to do and it just helps the kids relax if they are here having to give a testimony or anything in court.”
Donations are still being accepted for the Busy Boxes in Letcher County. Donations can be dropped off at the Letcher County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in the Health Department building in downtown Whitesburg.
