A Letcher County man is facing a felony charge in the alleged brutal killing a dog.

39-year-old Jason Lucas was arrested Wednesday in Letcher County, for allegedly torturing and killing a dog at Pistol City near the Colson community. Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Alisha Congleton said the dog, named Spike, had gotten out of its yard and walked up the road. She said Lucas shot Spike when it got into his yard.

When the dog fled, Congleton said, Lucas and two other people allegedly followed him down the road, and shot the dog at close range, and in front of the 10-year-old grandson of the dog’s owner.dog copy

Congleton said Lucas claimed the dog had attacked another dog, prompting the initial gunshots. She said he added that he finished killing the dog in order to keep it from attacking children playing nearby. But the deputy said the children stated the dog was not a threat to them, and her investigation found the dog posed no threat to any humans or animals at the time of the incident.

Lucas was lodged in the Letcher County Jail on a class D felony charge of torture of a dog or cat with serious physical injury or death. He could face up to five years in prison if convicted.

Congleton presented the case to a Letcher grand jury Thursday. She said more charges, involving other individuals, could be forthcoming in the case.
