Man says he has drugs during traffic stop

DORTON, Ky. — An Ohio man pulled over for a routine traffic stop was arrested last night, after volunteering to police that he had drugs in his vehicle.

According to the arrest citation, 36-year-old Mathew Emmel of Defiance, Ohio, was coming through a curve in Dorton at a high rate of speed while on the wrong side of the road. After a state trooper stopped Emmel, he allegedly told the officer he did not have a license and it was suspended in Ohio.

Police say Emmel acted nervous and was stuttering. Emmel allegedly told police he was coming from his cousin’s house but didn’t know his cousin’s name.

Police say Emmel attempted to stick his hand in between the seat and the console. When troopers told Emmel to get out of the vehicle, he allegedly said without prompting, “There’s a ton of drugs in the car.”

Emmel allegedly told police he had ice, coke, heroin, weed and roxies in the vehicle. Police allegedly found drugs bundled together in clear plastic wrapping and over $1,000 in cash. Police say he told them he purchased the drugs in Detroit and brought them here to sell for profit.

Mathew Emmel was arrested and lodged in the Pike County Detention Center. He’s now facing numerous drug trafficking charges as well as a charge of importing heroin.

Emmel is due back in court March 8th.
