Man shot, killed by police in Pike County identified

The person shot and killed by police in Pike County earlier this week has been officially identified.

Kentucky State Police Post 9 spokesperson Trooper William Petry tells Mountain Top News that the man shot and killed by officers at Shelby Gap on Tuesday has been identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Bentley, of Jonancy. Bentley died at the scene of the shooting.

The shooting occurred after police followed Bentley in a high-speed pursuit along Ky. 197-Elkhorn Creek Road. The chase turned northbound at Shelby Gap onto Ky. 805. Bentley’s vehicle encountered the scene of a fatality collision and he allegedly attempted to strike police with his vehicle in an attempt to escape the scene. Officers then shot and killed Bentley inside of his vehicle.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. The shooting and the fatality collision are not related.
