Remembering Sally McCoy’s role in the Hatfield McCoy Feud

PIKEVILLE, Ky. –  Winter is not traditionally thought of as a local tourist season. But, officials with Pike County Tourism say the New Year’s holiday, in particular, is a time when many Hatfield McCoy enthusiasts plan to visit.  For one recent visitor, seeing the grave of Sarah, also known as Sally McCoy, was very special.  Tricia Matthews recently played Sally in Barter Theatre’s production of The Sally McCoy Story, and she said seeing the name in stone was a stark reminder of the reality of the feud.  This year marks the 130th anniversary of the New Year’s Day Massacre at the McCoy home, which claimed the lives of two McCoy children and severely wounded Sally.  The home site, which can be visited today, is located at Hardy in Pike County.
