Mountain Sports Hall of Fame remembers high school basketball great Johnny Cox

WAYLAND, Ky. – The Mountain Sports Hall of Fame shared today some memories about former Fleming-Neon, Hazard, and UK Final Four MVP Johnny Cox.

Cox started his basketball career at Fleming Neon High School before transferring his sophomore year to Hazard where he earned All-State accolades.

But Cox wasn’t finished, by far.

As is the dream of so many high school basketball players in Eastern Kentucky, Cox went on to play at the University of Kentucky, and not only play, but help win one of many UK’s national titles. And the honors still didn’t stop with this, as Cox was named MVP of that 1958 tournament.

The Mountain Sports Hall of Fame shared images of Cox with fellow-UK player Carroll Burchett at a dinner held in Wayland’s storied gym in 2017, along with rare scoresheets from an historic standoff with Van Lear’s Bill Tom Wills.
