MTS/BWW PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Birchfield grabs honor

Pikeville running back Blake Birchfield rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers’ playoff win over Hazard this past Friday night.

The standout has now rushed for 1,944 yards and 19 touchdowns.

He had runs of 19, 28 and 42 yards, earning the Mountain Top Sports/Buffalo Wild Wings Player of the Week honors.

Here is this week’s special honorable mention:

Quarterback Grant Rice ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as Johnson Central improved to 10-2. Rice carried 11 times for 120 yards and passed for a score.

Honorable mention:

Johnson Central running back Matt Crum finished with 113 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries.

Letcher Central quarterback Carson Adams passed for 157 yards and one touchdown. Receiver Nicholas Haning caught six passes for 124 yards and a score.

Belfry running back Isaac Dixon rushed for 152 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown with less than six minutes remaining.

Martin County running back Kolby Sarks rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown and Dawson Mills added 94 yards and two scores.

Paintsville running back Harris Phelps had 91 yards and one touchdown and quarterback AJ James passed for 124 yards and one score.
