Nashville, TN — If you’re planning on travelling to Tennessee for the July 4th holiday, leave those cell phones alone! Beginning today (July 1st) the new hands-free law goes into effect. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, motorists can no longer record, broadcast video while driving and no more even holding your phone while driving. The way the law is written, even if you’re not making a call and just holding your phone in your hand while driving, you’re in violation of the new law. Violation of this law is a Class C misdemeanor. A traffic citation based on this violation is considered a moving traffic violation. Fines for violations of the law include: $50.00 first time offense and 3 points on your driving record. The fine goes up to $100.00 for third time offense along with 3 points on your driving record. Tennessee had the highest rate of districted driving deaths in a recent study. Authorities say the new law will try to improve those numbers.
