An outgoing magistrate in Letcher County is looking toward his next political race.
District 5 Letcher Magistrate Wayne Fleming recently declared his intention to run for mayor in the City of Jenkins. Fleming has served for 20 years on the Letcher Fiscal Court, and says he hopes to bring change to the city’s leadership and attract manufacturing jobs back to the formerly bustling coal town.
Fleming will challenge sitting Jenkins Mayor Todd DePriest in the November general election.
Jenkins is currently at the forefront of the expanded gaming debate in the state, as a firm is looking at locating a casino and resort on Raven Rock in Jenkins. Fleming said he doesn’t believe expanded gaming will be legalized in Kentucky in the near future, but he added that he is not opposed to the plans for the proposed Raven Rock Casino and Resort if expanded gaming is made law.
