Officials: Inmate at Wise County prison killed by cellmate

POUND, Va. — Officials are investigating an apparent in-cell attack at a Wise County prison that resulted in the death of an inmate.

According to a statement from the Virginia Department of Corrections, a 47-year-old inmate at Red Onion State Prison in Pound died the evening of Friday, July 3, after he was apparently attacked by his 54-year-old cellmate. The names of the two individuals have not yet been released by VDOC.

According to the statement, the victim was pronounced dead at Dickenson County Hospital just before 7 p.m. on July 3. The inmate was in general population and was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. The cellmate believed to have killed the victim is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder, second-degree murder, carjacking and robbery.

According to the statement, the incident is being investigated as a homicide.
