Parents facing harsher charges in abuse case

A Pike County couple was indicted recently for allegedly keeping their children locked unsupervised in unsanitary conditions.

The grand jury in Pike County indicted 28-year-old William Daniels and 22-year-old Cassidy Finley, both of Pikeville, on three felony counts each of first-degree criminal abuse. Pikeville Police responded on Jan. 22 to a report of possible child abuse or neglect at the couple’s residence on Cypress Lane. There, officers found the couple’s three children locked in separate rooms unsupervised.

Police wrote in court documents that one of the children was covered in its own feces and human waste was smeared on the walls of the room. The other children were allegedly locked in rooms with dangerous items, including medication and sharp objects, and human waste was also allegedly present in the room.

The couple was arrested at a Pikeville McDonald’s shortly after police found the children locked in the rooms. They were originally charged with felony wanton endangerment, but Commonwealth’s Attorney Bill Slone said the grand jury indicted them on the harsher criminal abuse charges due to the circumstances of the case.

The couple could face up to 10 years in prison on each charge if convicted. The children have since been placed in the care of relatives.
