BIG STONE GAP, Va. — The Pike Central Marching Hawks continued their undefeated season this past weekend with a commanding performance at the McChesney Band Festival in Big Stone Gap, Va. Competing against bands from across the region, the Hawks once again demonstrated why they are among the elite programs in the area — earning multiple first-place awards and top honors.
Under the direction of Jason Johnson, Steven Westfall and Jan Johnson, the Marching Hawks captured First Place in Music, Marching, Color Guard, Percussion, General Effect and within their Class, while also receiving an overall Superior Rating for their show, “Into the New World.” The production blends Dvořák’s “New World Symphony” with modern music and visuals, symbolizing growth, innovation, and forward momentum.
One of the evening’s standout moments came when Lindsey Johnson, an alto saxophone player for the Hawks, was named Best Soloist of the Day. Her expressive performance captivated both judges and audiences, earning her the competition’s highest individual honor.
Capping off an exceptional night, the Pike Central Marching Hawks were awarded Reserved Grand Champion, closing yet another competition with excellence and pride. The Hawks remain undefeated in their class this season, continuing a streak of outstanding performances and consistent achievement.
Director Jason Johnson praised not only the dedication of his students but also the overwhelming support of the Pike Central community.
“This season has been about more than just trophies,” Johnson said. “It’s been about how our community has rallied around these student musicians. The encouragement from parents, alumni, business, administration and local supporters has created an energy that pushes these students to give their very best. It’s a reminder that when a community believes in its young people, incredible things can happen.”
The Marching Hawks will continue their 2025 season with upcoming performances and competitions across the region as they prepare for the conclusion of their Into the New World show.
