Free black lung screenings offered Thursday in Whitesburg

WHITESBURG, Ky. — Federal health officials are offering free black lung screenings for coal miners in Eastern Kentucky.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will host the screenings on April 16 at the Whitesburg Medical/Dental Clinic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The program is open to all current and former coal miners, including those who worked underground, on the surface, or as contractors.

Officials say the screenings are designed to detect black lung disease early. The process takes about 30 minutes and includes a chest X-ray, breathing test, blood pressure check and a health questionnaire.

Screenings are free and confidential, and participants will receive their results in about 12 weeks.

Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins will also be accepted. Those interested in participating can call (888) 480-4042 or email cwhsp@cdc.gov to schedule an appointment.
