Pike County Detention Center confirms first Hepatitis A case

PIKEVILLE, Ky. –   The first case of Hepatitis A has been confirmed at the Pike County Detention Center.  Jailer Brian Morris told EKB News that since the Hepatitis A outbreak escalated earlier this year, he has implemented additional measures to screen for anyone who may be infected.  But, with 387 current inmates and a population that changes daily, keeping it out of the jail was nearly impossible.  The infected male inmate has been quarantined, and an investigation has pinpointed any inmates who have possibly come into direct contact with him.  Those inmates will be notified and vaccinated.  Morris said every employee at the Pike County Detention Center has been vaccinated against Hepatitis A.  Officials at the Pike County Health Department say the total number of cases reported to them since the statewide outbreak began remains under 15.
