The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for most of the region through Saturday evening, prompting Pike County officials to open several cooling centers throughout the county. Pike County Emergency Management Director Doug Tackett says all eight of the county’s Senior Citizens Centers will be open both Friday and Saturday until around 6pm or as long as needed. Those centers are located in Pikeville, Belfry, Elkhorn City, Kimper, Phelps, Shelby Valley, Blackberry and Marrowbone. He encourages everyone to check on their elderly friends and family members while the heat index approaches the 100 degree mark. Also, check on outside pets, making sure they have plenty of water and access to shaded areas.
