PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A Pike County man reportedly told police he decided to flee instead of pulling over, because he figured he would be going to jail either way.
Kentucky State Police received several reports Saturday that Steven Williamson, 53, of Kimper, was firing a gun while driving along Kendrick Fork Road and Upper Chloe Road.
State troopers responding to the calls spotted Williamson driving and attempted to stop him, but reported that he swerved around them and fled. A chase ensued, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles an hour, and Williamson managed to get away.
But the troopers radioed ahead to Pikeville Police, who caught up to him as he was stepping out of his truck at an address on Fife Fork Road.
Police found a 9 millimeter handgun and a bottle of Fireball whiskey in Williamson’s truck, and he reportedly told officers he had been smoking marijuana.
He was arrested and charged with fleeing police, felon in possession of a firearm, DUI and numerous traffic violations.
