Pike Schools investigating alleged blackface social media post by teacher

The Pike County Schools District is investigating a social media post allegedly made by a teacher in the district in which the teacher appears in blackface.

Pike Schools Superintendent Reed Adkins confirmed to Mountain Top News that the district is investigating the post allegedly made by a teacher at Belfry Middle School. Adkins said at the time that he had just become aware of the situation and was launching a probe into the incident.

The post by the teacher, whose name has been intentionally omitted from this report pending the outcome of the investigation, depicts the teacher wearing a black substance on their face. The caption on the photo reads, “Working on gettin that free health care. This should get me at least 50% coverage, right?!”, a possible reference to an initiative announced recently by Gov. Andy Beshear to ensure all of Kentucky’s African-American population is covered by some form of health care coverage.

Adkins said the district’s faculty and staff are required to adhere to a district-wide social media policy, upon which they are trained each year. Adkins said more information will be made available after the conclusion of the investigation.
