Pike woman expected to be first to plead guilty in federal drug conspiracy case

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The first defendant in a group of people accused of conspiring to distribute more than a pound of meth in Pike and Magoffin counties is expected to plead guilty next week.

Karen Spears, 45, of Pikeville, is scheduled to enter a guilty plea May 27. She is charged with conspiring with the other defendants to sell more than 500 grams of meth from August 2018 to September 2019.

The charge carries a minimum sentence of 10 years, extending all the way to life in prison.

Spears is charged along with eight other people, including:

  • Charles Doneghy, 32, of Louisville
  • John Wright, 41, of Dorton
  • Lois Spears, 27, of Pikeville
  • Emilee Yonts, 34, of Ashcamp
  • Lauren Powell, 22, of Elkhorn City
  • Lonna Spradlin, 28, of Auxier
  • Lonnie Thacker, 43, of Shelbiana

Seven of the defendants, including Spears were originally charged in 2019, but two more were added in a superseding indictment last year.
