Police: Fatal shooting occurred during burglary

JENKINS, Ky. — Police are continuing to investigate a fatal shooting in Jenkins, but the initial investigation into the incident indicates the shooting may have occurred during a burglary.

According to a statement from Kentucky State Police, the person killed in the shooting has been identified as James Russell Duncan, 39. The shooting occurred around 2:38 a.m. Monday morning at a residence along Ky. 805 just outside of downtown Jenkins. The statement says Duncan became involved in a confrontation with the owners of the residence, Justin and Kimberly Robinson, and that confrontation resulted in Duncan being shot and killed.

The statement says Duncan had entered the residence without consent. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident by Letcher County Deputy Coroner Derek Meade.

KSP Post 13 Spokesperson Trooper Jody Sims said it is unclear at this time who fired the shot or shots that killed Duncan. He added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

According to the KSP statement, the case will be presented to a Letcher County grand jury for consideration. No charges have been filed in the incident. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Duncan’s body later on Monday.
