Police: Man accidentally shot at Prestonsburg store

A person was accidentally shot at the Prestonsburg Big Lots department store.

Prestonsburg Police Det. Ross Shurtleff tells Mountain Top News that a contract employee for Big Lots was accidentally shot Thursday afternoon at the store. The as-yet-unidentified male subject was flown from the scene to Cabell-Huntington Hospital for treatment of his injuries. His condition was not immediately available.

Shurtleff said the gun which was accidentally fired in the incident is a handgun, but he declined to comment on who was in possession of the gun when it was fired.

Shurtleff says the store is closed pending the completion of the preliminary investigation into the shooting, and will likely be closed for several hours. He adds, however, that there is no danger to the public, nor is there any concern for public safety.
