A Pikeville man is facing felony charges after an incident where police say he strangled his girlfriend. Last week, a Pike Grand Jury indicted 36 year old Dike Newsome after hearing testimony from the State Police. Assistant Pike Commonwealth’s Attorney Melissa Goodman says Newsome is the first person her office has charged with Strangulation since the new law went into effect at the end of June. Goodman says Newsome allegedly strangled his girlfriend during a fight in July to the point where she became unconscious and had to be transported to the hospital. If convicted, the new strangulation charge carries a penalty of between five and ten years in prison.
