School Safety Funding

Washington D.C. — Two law enforcement agencies in our region will be getting funding through the STOP School Violence Act’s Community Oriented Policing Services, better known as COPS, School Violence Prevention Program. For the second year, COPS is providing funding to improve school safety through violence prevention. These funds will provide K-12, primary and secondary schools up to 75 percent funding for school safety measures including coordination with law enforcement, training for local law enforcement officers to prevent student violence against others and themselves, metal detectors, locks, lighting and other deterrent measures and or technology for expedited notification of local law enforcement during an emergency. In Kentucky, the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department will be awarded $136,673 and in West Virginia, the Logan County Sheriff’s Department will be awarded $196,500.
