Sheriff’s Office targets drivers passing stopped school buses

Last week, Shannon Deskins climbed aboard a Pike County school bus to see how many drivers were passing stopped buses that were loading and unloading students.  And, what she saw was shocking to everyone who saw it, including local law enforcement officials.  This week, the Pike County Sheriff’s Office organized a special enforcement detail aimed at targeting drivers who pass stopped buses.  On Wednesday, we rode the same bus as last week. But, this time, Chief Deputy Lynn Cross rode, too.  As the bus traveled and made its stops, two unmarked police cruisers watched from a distance.  And, amazingly, not one vehicle passed the bus as children were unloading.  Preston Riffe, who drives this bus, says since our story first aired last week, he has seen a significant decrease in the amount of drivers passing his bus when it is stopped.  Pike County Sheriff’s Office officials say they plan to continue watching the buses on a regular basis.
