Slide on new US 460 in Pike County closes westbound lanes

PIKE COUNTY – Friday, December 21, 2018 – Both westbound lanes of KY 3174, new US 460, are blocked due to a significant rock and mud slide that started about 3:30 this afternoon, Friday, December 21.

The eastbound lanes between Sookey’s Creek and Greasy Creek, starting at mile point zero and continuing to about mile point 3.0, are currently converted to two-way traffic, according to Vince Hayes of Highway District 12.

Hayes said the slide is still moving. “The hillside is unstable and material is still coming into the roadway,” he said. “It is quite likely that the ground will remain unstable until the rain stops, which is expected sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, we recommend that people use old US 460, especially tonight and tomorrow morning when rain and fog will compromise visibility.”

People who decide to use the new road anyway should be prepared to slow down considerably and understand that the eastbound lanes between Sookey’s Creek and Greasy Creek will be two-way traffic with no passing.

Highway District 12 crews are at the site; others are preparing message boards and placing signs. Material cannot be cleared from the site until it stops moving. Crews are in place to monitor the situation and determine if the eastbound lanes might be affected. If that happens, the entire road might have to be shut down, Hayes said.

Updates will be posted on Highway District 12’s Facebook page (KYTC District 12) and on D12’s Twitter platform.
