Woman arrested on counterfeit money charges

Paintsville, Ky: We’ve all heard the term “funny money” in reference to counterfeit money, but there is nothing funny about being arrested for trying to pass it off. A Johnson county woman found that out Thursday as she was arrested for passing of fake money at the VIP fuels on route 40 in Paintsville. According to the Paintsville police department, 35-year-old Melissa Terry of Wittensville came into the store and payed for her items with a fake twenty dollar bill. The clerk later noticed that it had printing on it that stated “for motion picture use only”. She contacted the Paintsville Police department, and when officer Zachary Mitchell arrived, he was shown video surveillance that clearly showed Terry using that fake twenty dollar bill.  A while later, Terry returned and attempted to pass off a fifty dollar bill; that was when Officer Mitchell caught her red handed there at the register trying to pay for her items. Management with VIP fuels says that counterfeit money does not only hurt their business, but in the long run it can hurt everyone.

“Well obviously we lose merchandise. Whatever they attempted to purchase is not really purchased, so it is a loss to the business. Also it can trickle down, if that continues to go on, you lose employees, costs go up. You have to raise the costs to cover the losses. It’s just a bad trickle, and it goes over the whole economy in this area.”
Terry was arrested and charged with theft by deception and possession of a forged instrument and lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention center.
