When it comes to holding an event in France, it appears Bellator will beat UFC to the proverbial punch.

According to multiple sources, Bellator will hold an event in Paris on Oct. 10. The promotion is expected to announce the card this week, sources said.

The event will mark the first major mixed martial arts show in France. The country recognized MMA as an official sport earlier this year after banning it in 2016. The French Boxing Commission has been tasked with overseeing the regulation of the sport.

France had long been one of the last European holdouts to not recognize the sport or host a major event.

UFC officials have publicly stated on several occasions that they were interested in holding an event in France once the sport became legal there, though a date or time frame was never discussed. It’s unclear if France was in their 2020 plans before the coronavirus pandemic started.

While the participants on the Bellator card are unknown at this time, it is worth noting that one of Bellator’s top heavyweights is veteran Cheick Kongo, who was born in Paris and is considered a pioneer of French MMA.
