MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. — The West Virginia teachers’ strike is officially over.
After nine consecutive days of traveling to Charleston and picketing at local courthouses, teachers and students will be back in the classroom, Wednesday. Teachers and other state workers have been outraged over pay, health insurance and seniority as well as other issues.
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced, Tuesday, a deal has been reached. All state workers will receive a 5% raise. The Public Employees Insurance Agency was frozen and a task force for that was created. Seniority for teachers was also saved, charter school bills were abolished and the payroll deduction authorization legislation was eliminated.
Students in Mingo County told EKB News they are proud of their teachers for standing up for themselves.
Mingo and Logan County Schools will be in session, Wednesday. Students in Logan County will operate on a two-hour delay, teachers will be on regular schedule.
