Friday morning, the Pike County Detention Center was placed on lockdown for over an hour while a Hazardous Materials Response Team investigated a suspicious powder. Jail officials say while inspecting incoming inmate mail, a powder came from an envelope and into the face of an employee. As a precaution, the employee was transported to Pikeville Medical Center while the powder was investigated. Pikeville Police and Fire officials responded and secured the area while Emergency Management officials utilized a piece of equipment to analyze the substance. They determined it was an over the counter medication used to enhance the effect of illegal drugs. Once that determination was made, the lockdown was lifted. The investigation into the package continues.
