Charleston, WV — Unemployment data from West Virginia counties have been released for the month of August. According to WorkForce West Virginia, unemployment increased in 13 counties, decreased in 30 and remained unchanged in 12. In our region, Logan County reported unemployment at 6.1 percent up from 6.0 percent in July, McDowell County reported 8.6 percent in August down from 9.2 percent in July and Mingo County reported unemployment rate of 6.7 percent in August down from 6.9 percent reported in July. Statewide, West Virginia reported unemployment rate of 4.6 percent in August and the National unemployment rate for August remained at 3.7 percent.

According to WorkForce West Virginia, the statewide unemployment for July was 4.7 percent which is the lowest seasonally adjusted unemployment rate since October 2008. 4 counties reported an increase, 50 counties reported a decrease and 1 county reported no change. Calhoun county reported the highest unemployment rate at 10.6 percent while Jackson county reported the lowest rate at 2.9 percent. Counties throughout the region, Logan County reported 6.0 percent down from 6.2 percent in June, McDowell County reported 9.2 percent down from 9.4 percent in June and Mingo County reported an unemployment rate of 6.8 percent which was down from 7.1 percent in June.

According to WorkForce West Virginia, the jobless rates dropped in 1 county, remained the same in two counties and rose in 52 counties in June. Jackson County reported the state’s lowest unemployment rate at 3.1 percent. Calhoun County reported the highest unemployment rate at 9.6 percent followed by McDowell County at 9.4 percent. Elsewhere in the region, Logan County reported 6.2 percent, Mingo County reported 7.0 percent and Wyoming County reported 7.1 percent. West Virginia’s statewide unemployment rate stands at 4.7 percent.

Unemployment rates fell in 55 Kentucky counties in June 2019, rose in 51 and remained the same in 14 counties, that according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet. Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate at 3.4 percent while Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate at 12.4 percent. Elsewhere in the region, Floyd County reported 7.4 percent, Johnson County – 7.6 percent, Lawrence County – 8.1 percent, Letcher County – 7.6 percent, Martin County – 8.0 percent and Pike County reported 6.7 percent. Statewide, the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in June and the National comparable rate was 3.8 percent.

Frankfort, KY — Unemployment rates fell in 94 Kentucky counties between March 2018 and March of this year, rose in 19 and remained the same in seven counties, that according to the Kentucky Center for Statistics, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce development Cabinet. Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 3.3 percent while Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate at 12.3 percent. Elsewhere in the region, Floyd County reported 6.7 percent, Johnson County reported 7.0 percent, Letcher County reported 6.6 percent, Martin County reported 7.3 percent and Pike County reported 5.8 percent. Kentucky’s statewide unemployment rate stood at 4.4 percent in March up one-tenth of a percent from February. The National unemployment rate stood at 3.9 percent in March.
