Two Letcher County Schools school buses were damaged in separate crashes Wednesday morning.
The crashes happened as students were on their way to school. Letcher County Schools Superintendent Tony Sergent said 11 students and a bus driver were on-board a bus that crashed into a creek in the Kingdom Come Creek area of Letcher County. Cowan Elementary School serves the area.
Sergent said the bus skidded in mud left on the roadway from the past weekend’s flooding. No one was injured in the crash. The students on-board the bus were ages K-8, Sergent said.
In West Whitesburg, a small school bus collided with another vehicle head-on at the intersection of Ky. Highway 15 and U.S. 119. Whitesburg Police said five people were sent to the hospital, including the bus driver and bus monitor on the school bus, and three other people in the other vehicle.
No students were on-board the bus in the West Whitesburg crash.
Sergeant said the incidents illustrate the delicate situation that exists every day with transporting students to and from school. Both crashes remain under investigation.
